Mugging Jamie

Postby typhon » Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:54 am

Jamie's being overconfident. Just because a bullet can be traced back to a gun doesn't mean it can be traced back to a specific person (who knows if Richard didn't steal his gun). Besides, he talks too much, and arguably, Richard is still being too curious for his own good. In real life, the mug would punch you in the face at the first attempt to negotiate.

As for Jamie, we know he can pull some basic self defense moves, and he's putting himself in danger by refusing to give up his wallet while not using them against Richard.

The catch is that Richard is holding a gun in his right hand. He can't actually punch Jamie at this point, and probably won't shoot him either for the reasons Jamie gave.

Jamie has way, way too much confidence in what he perceives to be other people's rational self-interest. It goes without saying, I think - if you ever get mugged don't do this.

Whatever you do act fast. Whether fight or flight, or aquiescence, I do not think you should try to argue and debate with the mugger.

I can, and I did, punch people with my right hand. And I'm left-handed. He has a left hand, he has legs. Also, it's possible to punch someone while holding a gun in the same hand.
He could even switch his gun to his left hand.

None of this is without risks, of course.

He could even hit with the gun - it is a heavy piece of metal after all.

Yeah, people aren't rational. Especially not muggers.
Come to think of that, who uses a gun to threaten people when a baseball bat is more than enough, less traceable, and can be much more easily bought, for much less money ?

Guns are more intimidating, as I think was pointed out in the commentary of one of the comics. If you're mugged by a guy with a baseball bat, you may think you can outfight him. If you're mugged by a guy with a gun, your main thought on the topic of fighting back will be "he could kill me in half a second".

And many people own guns for reasons other than mugging. I love guns, and I wouldn't want to not own one. And if you already have a very persuasive weapon, why use a different one?

It's a cultural thing, I guess. I've only ever met one person who owned guns.

A baseball bat is silent, untraceable, and easier to find. It's also easier to use (many people don't know how to use a gun correctly).
